Privacy Policy
In short. Poliglo helps you learn languages by reading. We collect what we need to run your account, save your words and progress, and power the AI features you choose to use. We do not sell your personal data and we do not show ads. Text, chat messages and photos you send to an AI feature are processed by third-party AI providers. You can delete your account and data at any time from the app.
This Privacy Policy explains how Poliglo (“Poliglo”, “we”, “us”) collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you use our website, web app and iOS and Android apps (together, the “Service”). By using the Service you agree to this Policy.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: email address, username, password (stored only as a salted hash), and, if you sign in with Google or Apple, the identifier and email they share with us.
- Learning data: your languages and level, saved words and flashcards, review history, known words, streaks, XP, goals and settings.
- Content you add: texts, articles and files you import, collections you create, and whether you mark content as private or shared.
- AI inputs: prompts you write to generate content, messages you send to the AI tutor, and photos you scan so text can be extracted.
- Messages to us: support requests, feedback, and content reports.
Information collected automatically
- Usage records: which features you use, coin transactions, AI usage records (feature, model, token counts, cost, timestamp), and purchase events.
- Device and log data: IP address, device type, operating system, app version, language settings, crash and error logs, and request logs used for security and debugging.
- Local storage: the app and website store preferences (such as your interface language and reader settings) on your device.
Information from others
- Apple and Google (sign-in, and purchase receipts through the stores) and RevenueCat (subscription status). We do not receive your payment card details.
2. How we use information
- To provide the Service: create your account, show content, look up words, build flashcards, schedule reviews, sync across devices.
- To run AI features: generate content, translate, explain words, hold tutor conversations, read text aloud, extract text from photos, and create cover images.
- To process purchases, subscriptions and coins, prevent fraud, and enforce usage limits.
- To keep the Service safe: detect and block content and behaviour that breaks our Acceptable Use & AI Policy, investigate abuse, and comply with law.
- To maintain and improve the Service: fix bugs, measure cost and performance, and tune limits and prices.
- To communicate with you about your account, security, purchases and policy changes.
Legal bases (EEA, UK): performing our contract with you (providing the Service); our legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, improvement); your consent (for example, scanning a photo, where we ask for it); and legal obligations.
3. AI features and your data
Several features send data to AI providers so that a response can be generated:
- The text of a word, sentence or content you are reading (for lookups, translation and explanations).
- Your prompts when generating content or images.
- Your tutor messages, recent conversation history, a short memory of what the tutor knows about you, and, if you open a chat from a content, part of that content.
- Photos you scan, to extract their text.
We route these requests through OpenRouter to underlying model providers (currently including OpenAI and Google, and others we may add). We send only what is needed for the request, and we do not include your email or password. Providers process the data to return a result under their own terms; we choose settings and providers that do not permit training on API data where this is offered, but we cannot control providers’ practices beyond our agreements. Do not enter sensitive information (health, financial, government IDs, passwords) into AI features or imported text.
Caching. To reduce cost and speed up results, we store AI replies in a shared cache keyed by a hash of the request. Cached replies for generic lookups (such as a word’s meaning) may be reused for other users; the cache does not contain your account details.
Safety review. Requests and outputs may be checked automatically, and in some cases reviewed by a person, to enforce our Acceptable Use & AI Policy (see section 7 of that policy). AI output can be wrong or offensive; see our Terms of Service.
4. How we share information
We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We share data only with:
| Recipient | Purpose |
|---|---|
| OpenRouter and AI model providers | Generating AI responses, speech and images (section 3) |
| Amazon Web Services | Hosting, database, file storage and logs (United States, Ohio region) |
| RevenueCat, Apple App Store, Google Play | Subscriptions, in-app purchases, receipts and refunds |
| Google and Apple | Sign-in, if you choose it |
| Professional advisers, authorities | Legal advice; responding to lawful requests; protecting people from harm, including reporting child sexual abuse material to the relevant authorities |
| A successor business | If Poliglo is merged, acquired or sold, subject to this Policy |
Content you choose to share publicly is visible to other users. Private content is visible only to you.
5. Dictionary data
Word meanings come in part from Wiktionary, extracted by kaikki.org, and are used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). Wiktionary is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation and its contributors.
6. Retention and deletion
- We keep your account and learning data while your account is active.
- You can delete your account in the app. Deleting removes your profile, wallet, coin history, cards, words, chats and referrals. AI usage records are kept only in a form no longer linked to you, for cost accounting.
- Backups and logs are deleted or overwritten on a rolling basis, normally within 90 days.
- We may keep limited records longer where the law requires, to resolve disputes, or to prevent a banned user from returning (for example, a record that an account was removed for a serious violation).
If you cannot use the app, email [email protected] from your account email and we will delete your data.
7. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live (including the EEA, UK, Brazil, California and other US states), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export or restrict the use of your data, to object to processing, to withdraw consent, and to complain to your data protection authority. Email [email protected] to exercise these rights; we will respond within the time required by law. We will not discriminate against you for using them.
You can also: change your language and settings in the app, manage subscriptions in your Apple or Google account, and revoke camera or photo permissions in your device settings.
8. Security
We use encryption in transit, hashed passwords, access controls and monitoring. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. If a breach affects you we will notify you as the law requires.
9. International transfers
We are based outside many of the places our users live, and our servers and providers are in the United States and elsewhere. Where required, we rely on safeguards such as standard contractual clauses for transfers from the EEA, UK and Switzerland.
10. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets a higher digital age of consent). We do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email [email protected] and we will delete it. See also our Child Safety page.
11. Changes
We may update this Policy. If a change is material, we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The “Last updated” date above shows the current version.
12. Contact
